Some business academics have framed the failure of American passenger railroad companies in the early 1900’s as an error in self-definition. As automobiles, busses & planes rose in popularity, the railroads continued to define themselves as railroads. If those companies had only thought bigger and considered themselves transportation providers, they might have found a way to survive and grow in a different form.
In the same way, collaboration centers depend on definition for their impact and success. Most SMB leaders are attuned to the collaboration imperative: the need to break down silos and align disparate teams. The vision may be brand growth, product innovation, or improving internal customer service. All commendable goals, they are however limited in their internal gaze.
Building a strong internal collaboration center is a good way to prepare for (and discover) even bigger possibilities, collaboration may (and should) reach farther than your company walls.
